The Chicago Manual of Style

Chicago Style Citations

What is the Chicago Manual of Style?

The Chicago Manual of Style is another style format for which professionals use to format and cite their work. Chicago is mostly used by the following disciplines: Business, History and the Fine Arts. Always double-check with your professor to see which citation and style format they prefer.

The Chicago Manual of Style is broken down into two styles: (1) notes and bibliography and (2) author-date. How do you know which one to use?

  1. The notes and bibliography system is used in literature, history and the arts
  2. The author-date system is used by the natural sciences and social sciences

If your professor requires you to use Chicago, clarify with them which system they prefer, as the two systems vary in the way you write your bibliography and use in-text citations.
